G'day Mates. And, with that we wrap up our knowledge of Australian idioms. However, a discussion of dancing in Australia continues through the rest of this script. Victoria is Australia's most Southeastern state. Melbourne is its capital situated at the north end of Port Philip bay. A set of circumstances, which will hopefully become apparent as you read this script, made our website interested in the Melbourne, Australia ZOOZ dance sessions and specifically the weekend workshop that this session runs annually in the March/April time period. So, without further ado, please read on about a unique event, one that kind of links the various sections of this web site, thediskcoordinator.com, together. Note:Clicking on a picture will display that picture in its original size on the screen

Based at 2 Miller Street in Elsternwick, Victoria, the Zooz Israeli dance studio runs multiple dance sessions throughout the year. (If you click the link you will be directed to Google+ and the studio's web site.) Elsternwick is a suburb of Melbourne and many of the sessions are at this location although other facilities are used throughout the area. Richelle and Belinda Arber, mother and daughter, act as teachers and administrators of the many activities of ZOOZ which was established in 2005. Richelle indicates that she became interested in Israeli dancing after attending a session in 1992. Starting slowly, she gained momentum by frequently attending the famed annual Karmiel Israeli dance workshops. In 2003 she attended the Foreign Israeli Dance Teachers’ Course also based in Karmiel where she joined would-be Israeli dance instructors from around the world. Richelle's enthusiasm for Israeli dance was picked up by her daughter Belinda who accompanied her Mother to Israel on multiple occasions starting from 1996. In addition of the weekly classes - and we are showing the 2016 schedule of classes within this montage - ZOOZ started to host weekend workshops with each workshop having a different theme. Over the years workshop themes have included: Saturday Night Fever, Alice in ZOOZ, Wizard Of ZOOZ, Pirates and the like. Note: The diamonds on the map - the top is Elsternwick, the botton is Rye - show the locations within the Melbourne regional area for those not familiar with the area.

So, as indicated, Richelle and Belinda run several of these weekend workshops throughout the year. One generally occurs annually on a Fall weekend (for Phila regional dancers, please remember the seasons are opposite in Australia) with 2012, for instance, featuring Ira Weisburd on his world tour which this website also covered when Ira visited several dance venues in Delaware. Every year is a different theme and the theme for the 2013 workshop caught our history editor's attention as will be explained later. This montage as shown dd shows some pictures of these workshops over the years. We should note the workshops generally occur at the Rye, Victoria community hall although meals are at the nearby Rye Hotel which has sufficient capacity to cater for the workshop's attendees.

The workshop that is the focus of this script occurred during Friday, May 3rd through Sunday, May 5th. The guest instructor for this weekend was Shmulik Gov Ari. Philadelphia regional dancers know him from his dances such as Eilat, Kol Niderai, Stam Yom Shel Chol, Kachol, etc. Gov Ari has been a choreographer since the middle '70s and the Aussie database credits him with 325 choreographed dances. We show some pictures dd of Shmulik posing with some of the attendees at the ZOOZ workshop that weekend.

Shmulik now lives in Connecticut in the United States and maintains a website at www.shmulikgovari.com and the welcome page of this site is the first of the picture dd. On this web site you can get a brief bio which indicates that Shmulik is of Yemeni Jewish origins, as are many of the great artists of Israel, and maintains a heavy schedule of teaching which includes two weekly sessions of Israeli dance for all ages and two weekly session dedicated to kids and teens. This montage includes pictures that can be found on his web site.

Again, by looking at his web site, there is no doubt that Shmulik's love for kids and providing resources for such extends far beyond his weekly Tuesday and Sunday classes. One of the tabs on his web site is dedicated to offering Jewish culture and programs to the younger set. This montage consists of two commentaries on his web site and we include a picture that accompanies one of those commentaries.

For the Melbourne ZOOZ workshop Shmulik taught a number of dances all of which he had choreographed. Below we list Shmulik's repertoire for that weekend. Note: As always we are using Aura Levin Lipsky and Jack Steel's Aussie database - even more appropriate for this script - with one exception to determine the music information for each of the dances below.

Of course, the proof in the pudding in terms of what is taught is the question of what is retained. It's very rare that multiple dances become a part of a group's repertoire after a workshop. Richelle Arber reports that Na’ale Yerushalayim, Boreh Olam, Mishamayim, Birkat Ha’kohanim, Mazel Tov Israel, Tash Tash and very occasionally Lifney ve’Acharei and Mizmorey Nevochim are played as part of the repertoire in the current ZOOZ dance sessions. Veterans of Israeli dance camps know that this is a great result for any workshop and speaks highly of Shmulik's choreographic and demonstrative talents and Richelle's administrative and teaching efforts.

And while we are literally in the area, this web site has been reminded that however visible and important Aura Levin Lipsky is to the Aussie database, the original database was created by Jack Steel who still provides the technological impetus to its operations. As we have been told, the database was started to abet Jack's efforts in learning Israeli dances. A tangential result was that Jack created his own shorthand notation of dance steps which can still be found on the database as indicated in the first screen shot of this montage. To get to this on the database, click the "More" template and ask for "Site Index A-Z". Jack is well known in Melbourne where he resides and his biography and accomplishments can be found on his web site which we replicate here.

On Saturday night the participants of the workshop stop dancing for the night to attend a dinner followed by an improvised show. The show deals with an annual theme as indicated above. From ZOOZ's web site we have ascertained that in 2009 there was a pirate themed workshop. Perhaps this was to celebrate the Pirates Of The Caribbean film series over the years. 2010 saw an Alice in Wonderland theme designated as Alice in Zoozland for that weekend. But, it was the 2013 workshop that we are going to concentrate on for the rest of this script.

Our historical editor was readying a script on the world of James Bond. Readers and visitors of this web site should understand that there are sections and scripts that cater to the other interests of our editors besides Israeli dance and you can find these bunched by clicking here. Several things had happened at the end of 2015 that pertained to the world of 007. The movie Spectre had debuted in November. Anthony Horowitz had written a Bond book that was situated in 1959 and contained some recently found writings of Ian Fleming, the author of the Bond books. And to top off the Bond events of last year, Fleming's nephew Fergus had compiled Flemings letters and published a compendium of Fleming's correspondence. The proposed script, which eventually will end up on this web site, was going to start with the declaration that no two worlds could be so different as that of Israeli dance and James Bond. So, utilizing Google, an entry of "James Bond" "Israeli Dance" was made and we show in this montage the surprising result of following the initial blurb about the 2013 ZOOZ weekend workshop. Surprise, Surprise: We had found an Israeli dance event which included, perhaps we could say lauded, the world of James Bond.

With a little research we got in touch with Richelle who apparently is a fan of both subjects and she filled us in as to the details of the workshop's Saturday night events.

We learned that a James Bond inspired skit was performed - we present this at the bottom of this script - and a test was developed by one of the participants, Sam Granek, that was given to all who participated that Saturday night. All of this was done in what is normal Bond attire for the movies: Tuxedo and bow tie.

This inspired the script that you are reading as we document this very unique event. Directly below are some of the pictures from the workshop's Saturday night dinner. These pictures, as with most of the pictures of the workshop and the dance session, have been supplied by Richelle. And below the following picture montage, we've arranged with the ZOOZ dance session to test how well you would have done had you been at the event.

You can see that the attire for the Saturday night activities is quite different than needed for dancing. This event was very formal. Most men and women are wearing black tuxes (or at least black dinner jackets) with red bowties. Who could they possibly be emulating? Of course there are several women who appear to have been inspired by one or more Bond girls. But this web site has some ideas on the participants dress represented by the last of the pictures in this montage. Remember that Bond finds himself in formal affairs and dress throughout the movies although the instances are not as great in the books. But, the introduction of the literary Bond in the book, Casino Royale and his introduction in the film, Dr No, has Bond in casinos where formal dress used to be a requirement.

Here's where you, the reader, participates. This is the test that was given to the participants of the annual ZOOZ Israeli dance group's 2013 Weekend camp in Rye, Australia during the Saturday night festivities on May 4th, 2013. Below, we indicate the questions, but even further below we give the answers and have allowed our historical editor, who we could see was itching to add his two cents, to add some comments. You can test yourself on this. There are 20 questions and we guess we can rate you by the following:

You got all 20 correct! Sure you aren't Ian Fleming the author?

16 to 19: Perhaps you are part of the Cubby Broccoli family? If not, perhaps you should apply to them for a job

13 to 15: Did you play James Bond in one of the movies?

10 to 12: Perhaps you are a former Bond Girl

5 to 9: Perhaps you are (or were) a henchman for either Smersh or Specter?

Less than 5: Sorry, but you'd better go back and read the novels and see the movies

The Answers

/1. Ursula Andress is the answer. Ursula Andress has a very interesting pedigree even without being the first "Bond Girl" when she played Honeychile Rider (trimmed to Honey Rider) in Dr No. Andress was born in 1936 to a Swiss mother and a German father, Rolf Andress, who was a diplomat for the Nazi government and who disappeared mysteriously during World War II. In 1954 and 55, she did appear in several movies with non significant parts while she was involved with at first James Dean and then John Derek whom she married in 1955. There would be a seven year hiatus before her next movie, the aforementioned Dr No. But Ursula certainly had the looks and figure for what was called at the time Art Modelling where she was well known. Part of this might be because the European film industry, not to mention the art world, was fascinated by Brigette Bardot and Andress had a faint resemblance to this French film star. Because Honey Rider is naked at the time of her introduction to Bond in the book, Dr No, it was obvious that any actress playing this part would be dressed as little as possible and had to feel natural in this display. Andress' background and experience in partial and probable full nudity would have given her an advantage over other actresses - remember this is the early sixties when bikinis were still considered risque if not pornographic - during screen tests wearing the famous Honey Rider Bikini.

/2. The answer is Pussy Galore. By the time in 1958 that Ian Fleming wrote Goldfinger England had established a fairly liberal attitude toward sex and sexual innuendo in literature. Therefore, Fleming could get away with the name Pussy Galore as far as the British, and later American, reading public was concerned. Perhaps this was the most suggestive of the names that Fleming affixed to his heroines but really not unique to his writings considering other monikers that he ascribed to women such as Solitaire, Vesper, Tiffany and the famous Tiffy short for Artificial. However, as the books are transformed into movies, this is another situation. In the US limited free speech had come to movies in 1952. Yet, during the 1950's an American board of censors held sway and frowned on any overly suggestive idea of sex leading to the one foot rule that said male actors must keep one foot on the floor in bedroom scenes with the additional restriction that no kiss should be longer than 3 seconds. Probably England and Australia had similar rules and restrictions in effect during the 50's and 60's. So, it was pretty clear to the producers of Goldfinger that this name might be a problem when the movie Goldfinger premiered in Fall, 1964. It is said that the original intention during the production of the movie in Spring, 1964, was to set Galore's first name to Penny as Honor Blackman took up the role. The actors supposedly complied with this name change during the filming which would mean that the use of the name Pussy was dubbed in as the film was readied for release. However, it was decided to test the advisability of the name Pussy Galore at the London premiere of the film as the Royal family, led by Prince Philip, was in attendance. Multiple pictures were taken of Philip talking with Blackman at this premiere and the headlines the next day blared "The Prince and the Pussy" which kind of gave an unofficial acceptance of the heroines name.

/3 and 4. Here is the answer to who has played James Bond in media. Given the film, television and radio media, at least 8 men have played James Bond in serious adaptations of oo7s stories. Intermittently, the BBC had reenacted Fleming's novels on radio and several male actors have handled Bond's voice. In 1954 (or possibly 1955), Casino Royale was televised live on CBS with Barry Nelson playing the agent, Jimmy Bond, in that drama. Not counting the original Casino Royale film which was done as a parody and which had almost every actor playing James Bond including Woody Allen, six men have played James Bond over the years in the movies. We list them below and include the film title(s)

Sean Connery: Dr No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, Dianonds are Forever, Never Say Never Again
George Lasonby: On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Roger Moore :Live and Let Die, The Man With The Golden Gun, The Spy who loved me, Moonraker, For your eyes only, Octopussy, A View To A Kill
Timothy Dalton: The Living Daylights,License To Kill
Pierce Brosnan: Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough, Die another Day
Daniel Craig: Casino Royale, Quantum Of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre (sometimes indicated as Specter in the United States)

/5 & 6. Oddjob and his Bowler hat. Harold Sakata (although many references have this as Harold Saketa) was born in Hawaii and in 1948 was the recipient of a silver medal in weightlifting (in the class of light heavyweight) at the London Olympics. Sakata became a professional wrestler and his previous exposure to London for the Olympics perhaps directed him toward a career in such wrestling enterprises in Canada and England where he appeared under the alias, Tosh Togo. Sakata's career was still going strong by 1964 as Goldfinger is about to begin filming and the question arose as to who would play Goldfinger's chief henchman, the korean named Oddjob. In the book it is obvious that the name encompasses this henchman's duties for his master which includes killing any opponents.
Fleming, as usual, was prescient in terms of what would become popular in the near future when he wrote Goldfinger in 1958. The early sixties would see an increase in interest in martial arts and Oddjob certainly represented this in the book. Oddjob is a Korean martial arts expert with a cleft palate whose biceps look like thighs. At Bond and Goldfinger's dinner together in the book, Goldfinger decides to give Bond a subtle warning as to what awaits him if he continues to pursue his inquiry into Goldfinger's activities. Oddjob, as presented in the book as only Fleming could, gives Bond a primer in the use of offensive martial arts which includes an upside down flying leap culminating with a leg kick that destroys a piece of furniture after having striped off much of his clothes and his ever constant ugly bowler hat to perform this. While Bond gets the message, he attempts to undercut the tension with a question as to why this servant continually wears the hat and the last action by Oddjob is to show its use as he flips the hat, reinforced with a steel brim, into the wall with such impact that the hat sits stationary in the air at its impact with the plaster for a bit before falling to the floor.
So, there is popular opinion in England early in 1964 that Tosh Togo would adequately fulfill the roll of Oddjob in the film given his asian genetics and massive muscularity. Wearing a black suit and a bowler hat, Sakata was probably the hit of the movie as he and Sean Connery confront themselves in various situations including the fight to Oddjob's death in the gold vault of Ft Knox.

/7. Richard Kiel portraying Jaws. Fleming tried an experiment with the 10th book of the series, The Spy Who Loved Me, written in 1961. This attempted to tell the story of a Canadian women, Vivienne Michel, involved in a dangerous situation in a down trodden motel in upper New York State. Bond who is travelling between Ottawa and Washington (or at least Canada and the US) stops for a night at the motel and resolves the situation as indicated by Michel's narration. This experiment was a major failure and the book was severely panned. On Fleming's agreement with Eon productions to film the novels, it is said that he specifically told Albert Broccoli only to use the title and not the plot. Broccoli complied and the movie version is completely different with the British Secret Service connecting with the KBG to resolve a problem pertaining to a business magnate intent on ruling if not destroying the earth. With the success of Goldfinger, the producers were looking to duplicate the presence of Oddjob and wrote in a character, named Jaws, who was over 7 feet tall and had a steel fused mouth for creating (and biting) mayhem.
This somewhat presented a problem as there were few actors around in the 70's with this type of presence and height. But one actor who was 7'2" was eventually signed for this role which was reprieved in the next James Bond movie, Moonraker. Richard Kiel was this actor and if you are a fan of the Twilight Zone TV series you will remember him as the tall alien in the episode "To serve Man" which has quite a twist as only Rod Serling could imagine. Anyway as mentioned, Kiel played Jaws in The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker.

/8 & 9. Diana Rigg portrays Tracy. After the failure of The Spy Who Loved Me, Fleming returned to form with On Her Majesty's Secret Service. This time he was armed with a little bit more Hollywood trivia. After all, while he is writing this book, close to him is the production and filming of the first James Bond movie, Dr No. Fleming gets his view of many of the actresses as they perform or await performances in that movie and there is even a reference to Ursula Andress that he puts into this book. Perhaps this familiarity allowed him to create one of his best heroines for OHMSS, the countess Teresa di Vicenzo known as Tracy
Talk about exotic! Tracy is the product of an English woman and a Corsican who is destined to become the head of the Union Corse, the secret criminal society in France that is similar to the Mafia in Italy. Even without this exotic background, Tracy is a very disturbed young woman, suffering from depression and suicidal tendencies as Bond meets her in the same casino, the Casino Royale, where the first of the Bond books takes place. And, in a similar manner, she will share a similar fate as happens to Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale, dead before OHMSS ends. In Tracy's case, as Fleming relates to his readers, she had been recently dumped by her husband and their little girl, just a year old, has died a horrible death. Eventually Bond finds Tracy to be very similar to him in outlook and isolation and he proposes and marries her. Fleming also said that Tracy's fate was sealed the day he first wrote her into the story and she is assassinated on their honeymoon drive.
As the movie revs up for production in late '68, it is assumed that Sean Connery will be back to play Bond for the sixth time. And, it will be somewhat different for him as the screen play follows for the most part the flow of the book and the book was the most romantic of the series by far. So, the producers decide to fill the role of Tracy with a well known British actress who had studied with the Royal Shakespeare company before entering more commercial pursuits. They hope to provide more realism to the role and a real romantic attraction for Connery.
This actress, Diana Rigg, had studied with the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and moved into the Royal Shakespeare company as indicated above in 1959. On a whim she auditioned for an odd program never expecting to be selected but fate would decide otherwise. Wearing either leather mini skirts or leather pants and boots with heels - although you can see one instance where the leather had given way to something more intimate - for several years she portrayed the martial arts expert (not to mention brilliant chemist and industrial heir) Dr Emma Peel in the Avengers.
Unfortunately, for both her and the movie going public, Connery was adament that he was finished with Bond and the job was given to George Lazenby, who is Australian, for only this movie and, quite frankly, that was enough. However bad Lazenby's performance was, the soundtrack is one of the best, and certainly the most romantic, of the Bond movies with John Barry hitting new highs.

/10. The Aston Martin DB 5. Fleming had many hobbies and interests including that of Automobiles. In the third book, Moonraker, Bond is placed in a Bentley and for the most part this is what he uses in the limited times that we read about his drives around London. Most times however he is in a "company" car. As he pursues Goldfinger, he has the choice of an Aston Martin DB III or a Jaguar to go with his personae of a well to do young man around town that he is to project to Goldfinger. He chooses the DB III because of some added assessories that ultimately allow him to track Goldfinger through France and Switzerland. As Goldfinger is ready to be produced as a movie, the producers sign an agreement with Aston Martin to create a car, based on the newly introduced Aston Martin DB5. This would prove to be a suitable drive for the most famous secret agent in the world. The result is a car on steroids including ejection seats, machine guns, reinforced bumpers and oil/nail tracks. Most movie goers remember this car and it has made multiple reappearances throughout the movie series
Interestingly enough it is not the DB5 that most car historians find most appealing in Goldfinger. The actress playing Tilly Masterton, Tania Mallet, is driving a prototype for the Ford Mustang in the third tier of pictures in this montage, the first appearance in public for this car. The mustang would go on to be a tremendous seller for Ford.

/11 & 12. 14 times and we'll let you decide. In the books Miss Moneypenny is the secretary to the head of the secret service, the admiral known as M. In several cases Fleming fleshed out the staff of the secret service including multiple mentions of the Chief Of Staff, Bill Tanner, who does not appear in the movie series until Pierce Brosnan assumes the mantle of Bond. Bond's secretary is Loelia Personby who handles the administrative affairs for the 00 section. For most of the books, when referenced, there are only three participants in this 00 section including our hero, James Bond 007. Most conversations between a secretary and Bond is on the Loelia Personby level and Personby is replaced by Mary Goodnight in OHMSS and to some degree in The Man With The Golden Gun.
This presented a problem for the screenwriters and the director of Doctor No, Terence Young. There was some doubt whether American audiences would warm to a character like Bond who exuded such British tendencies. Adding other staff with the same tendencies might make this first Bond movie too British in the eyes of the movie producers. So the director Terence Young merged the two secretaries together into one part which we now know as the movie version of Moneypenny. In addition, to make the character of Bond more realistic if not sympathetic, Young added a part for some woman to play Bond's semi serious girlfriend, if you will, while at headquarters in London. This girlfriend role was never to be serious, or quite frankly to last long, as the movie Bond, similar to the literary Bond, would get involved with the heroines found on his assignment.
There were several women up for the part of Moneypenny and the eventual role player was cast first as the girl friend. But this actress, Lois Maxwell, had a husband who suffered from a serious heart condition eating up quite a bit of resources and so she was interested in a steady paycheck and opted for the role of Moneypenny in the films based on her assumption that this role would last much longer. In this Maxwell was correct as Lois Maxwell would be Miss MoneyPenny through the Connery, Lazenby and Moore eras of the character and this would be 14 movies with a last appearance in A View To A Kill. Maxwell died in Fremantle, Australia, on September 29th, 2007.
Although Fleming would describe her as the desirable Miss Moneypenny and at other times as Penny, one assumed this as a nickname and not a first name so the books never give a clue as to a first name. The movie Skyfall introduces a character named Eve Moneypenny who starts out as a field agent and eventually makes it into the office as the new M's secretary. However, Ian Fleming productions which holds the rights to all things dealing with the literary James Bond several years ago introduced a spin off series called the Moneypenny diaries where her first name is indicated as Jane. Therefore, for question 12, count yourself as a success if you answered none, Eve or Jane.

/13. 1962 is the agreed upon answer. Sometime in 1961 an agreement was arranged between Ian Fleming, on one hand, and the team of Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman. Saltzman had sometime earlier agreed to a six month option with Fleming which would allow him the time to raise the money to buy the film rights while also securing the funding to create the movies. As events unfolded, he was at the end of the option period having still not secured the funding. Albert Broccoli, who had been a partner with the director Irwin Allen in Warwick films, had also been interested in securing the film rights for the books but a series of unfortunate events had left him in the lurch also. Through a chance remark, a friend of both, Wolf Mankowitz, introduced one to the other and with perhaps a day left in the option, they were able to secure financing from United Artists to film the first James Bond movie. But, which one of the books? Interestingly enough, both Broccoli and Saltzman wanted to start with Thunderball but a lawsuit had developed which made ultimate ownership of the book rights questionable.
By the middle of 1961 the pair, whose company went by the name of Danjaq, had focused on Dr No and the location of Jamaica to film the first Bond movie. Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean and had been granted the right of independence by England to occur in August, 1962.
Between preparations for independence and the filming of what was considered a great local story by a well known local resident (Fleming spent part of the year in residence in Jamaica), the island went wild with anticipation as to who would play Bond and where would be the film locations.
On Nov 3, 1961, a statement is released in London indicating that Thomas Connery, whose stage name of Sean Connery was a utilization of his middle name, would play the part of Bond. Pre production of the movie occurs late in 1961 and full production in Jamaica begins with the arrival of Connery mid January, 1962. After location filming wraps up in Jamaica, a sound stage in London is used to complete the movie. October 5, 1962 would see the premiere of the release of the film in London, England and so the answer to the question is 1962. However, it is believed that both the US and Australia release of the movie was in the middle of 1963. And, for trivia buffs everywhere, that same day, Oct 5 1962, the Beatles released "Love Me Do" in London which was their first big hit.

/14. Bond has a license to kill. With his good looks Bond certainly has charmed many women so you could conclude that he has the license to charm but that is not our answer. Bond certainly knows how to drive a motorcycle and uses one to resolve one of the short stories in "For Your Eyes Only" designated as "A view to a Kill". However we assume motorcycle licenses in England would not start with such simplistic numbers. And, it's certainly true that if James Bond had joined the participants in our 2013 Melbourne workshop he would have had a license to dance.
But, in talking with his chief, M, Bond is addressed as agent 007. He is part of the 00 section which generally in the books has a complement of three agents including Bond. It is said in the books that the 00 indicates that the British government has given him a license to kill when the situation arises. We assume this number as license is a verbal allowance by M, the head of the secret service although this montage shows several artistic representations in a humorous manner. But like any other government agent, Bond must carry some kind of identification (except when under cover) to allow him to enter his office. For your own information Fleming had said that the origin of the 00 designation was from a World War II assignment which was so numbered. And Fleming would have had a good position to see these numbered actions as he was an assistant to the chief of Naval inteeligence during that war.

/15. Condoms and possibly chest wigs. During the period 1964 through 1968, the James Bond personae became a marketing powerhouse. There were ads for drinks, for clothes, for merchandise if not under his own name or number, then using references to the movies. It would not be unusual to hear a male voice talking to a secretary named Moneypenny about some product during an ad campaign. Since 1996, this idea of branding has only become more intensive. Movies producers today use paid product endorsements to help fund the cost of movie production. Besides product placement in the movie itself, the leading actors in the Bond movies - and this would certainly extend to the actor playing Bond - agree to have their images used in both print and video advertisement. However, since Bond was and is an icon to both sexes, decorum is needed. Melbourne reports that only condoms have been a no-no but we'd also have a question about chest-wigs.

/16. The use of garlic at an inappropriate time. There could be no doubt that Diana Rigg (not to mention the movie going public) would have preferred to see Sean Connery back in the part. But Rigg was a professional and we doubt the rumor that spread through the then existent fan magazines that she ate garlic before her romantic scenes with George Lazenby but this rumor persists even to the present day. Keep in mind that Lazenby has not been quiet about his single Bond performance. The following quote "They made me feel like I was mindless. They disregarded everything I suggested simply because I hadn't been in the film business like them for about a thousand years" is a direct quote from Lazenby about the producers of the film and "Bond is a brute" tells you how he felt about the role he had just played. One assumes that if Rigg had done this to him, he wouldn't have kept quiet and there would have been quotes galore somewhere about this.

/17. Cigars. No doubt Roger Moore probably would have enjoyed all of these freebies. Now in his late 80's he has been married 4 times, enjoys cooking and fine food and as a male model, which is how he broke into the business, we assume that manicures were probably an acquired habit. However, he is a well known cigar smoker and it is very believable that such smokes were unlimitly provided. We believe he also was a cigarette smoker but broke that habit many a year ago. Another Bond known to enjoy cigars is Pierce Brosnan and one wonders if he was supplied in a similar manner.

/18. A knife covered in poison positioned in the toe of her foot. Both the book and movie of From Russia With Love is a favorite of Bond fans and those who worked on the movie. Sean Connery considers it his best Bond film and the producers, Cubby Broccoli and his heirs, always start the process of creating a new Bond movie in the hopes of creating another From Russia With Love. Fleming put a lot into the book and it is said that he was ambivalent as to whether another Bond book would ever be written after he created this book in 1956 (published in 1957). Bond doesn't even show up until a third way through the book so the character development of the villians is extraordinary. The ending drama reminds you of what Conan Doyle did with the Sherlock Holmes character when he went on a hiatus from writing the Holmes books. Bond is left almost dead thanks to some trickery by Rosa Klebb at the end of the book. While Bond holds her at bay awaiting the French authorities, Klebb uses one shoe to touch and activate a small knife in the toe of the other shoe. As the French bundle her out of the room where this is occuring, Klebb kicks Bond in the shin. The knife in the shoe is described as discolored and it is only in the next book that you are told that Bond falls vicim to fugu poisoning - something similar to curare - that paralyzes the central nervous system. The book ends with Bond's collapse.
After the book was published Fleming did get quite a bit of correspondance over the fate of Bond as readers were beginning to blur the lines between reality and fiction. Of course if Fleming was serious in taking a break from Bond, he really would not have written the next book, Dr No, before FRWL's publication. But it's clear when reading the book that FRWL is a cut above most of Fleming's writings.
FRWL is the second of the Bond films and in the first film the producers had gone against type in casting Joseph Wiseman as Dr No. Wiseman had done movies before but was well known as a broadway actor - one who was very serious about drama and writing. Since that worked out well, the producers again gambled in casting the villians of From Russia With Love. Red Grant would be played by Robert Shaw in his first acting role. Shaw was a friend of Sean Connery and had written several plays and several books. Like Connery, Shaw was a body builder and this would serve him well in this part. For the actress to play Rosa Klebb, she of the hidden knife in the shoe, the film tapped Lotte Lenya to act the part. Lenya had been a singer and actor in Germany as Hitler came to power. She escaped that country with her off and on again husband, Kurt Weill and for the rest of her life she would dedicate herself to Weill's works although he died in 1950. Although a singer at the beginning of her career, she did turn to acting in the late 50's. But, her most famous and most villianous movie part was the book's Smersh, and the films Spectre's commander of operations and executions, Rosa Klebb.

/19. Vodka Martini shaken and not stirred. In the first book,Casino Royale, Bond discusses drinks with Felix Leiter. Leiter is a CIA agent who will appear in five additional books that Fleming writes in the series. In this conversation, Bond defines his idea of a vodka martini and we quote: "Three measures of Gordons, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until its ice cold, then add a thin slice of lemon peel." For your information, Kina Lillet is a blended French wine and, in addition, Bond will add the stipulation that the vodka should be grain based. With these words Bond becomes associated with vodka martinis, shaken and not stired. This web site has a familiarity with the creation of these types of drinks. In 1984, to honor the life, perhaps to celebrate a great writer, a group of Bond aficiandos got together on August 12th, 1984 - the twentieth anniversary of Ian Fleming's death - to eat and drink some the food and drinks associated with the novels. We remember Scrambled Eggs James Bond and several fish dishes involving Dover sole among other things and the attempt to duplicate this martini. At the time Gordon's was not available in liquor stores around the Philadlephia area. Recent research indicates that there was a transfer of production of this gin from plants in England to plants in Scotland about this time and this might have accounted for the shortage. A substitute for Gordons was secured and everyone partook of the produced Martini which we can relate is very strong and not to have on an empty stomach.

/20. The Melbourne ZOOZ Israeli dancing group, but of course. Bond's travel in the books usually pertain to the Americas (Caribbean, US and Canada) and Europe (Germany France, England, Italy and Turkey). Exceptions to this is the Hildebrand Rarity short story in the Seychelles and the trip to Japan in You Only Live Twice. The movies have expanded Bond's iternarary with trips to India, Russia, Iceland, Mexico, Afghanistan, central America and Korea. We don't know of any published or videoed exploits in Australia where the Melbourne based ZOOZ dance studio resides but we're sure that Mr Bond would certainly get the drift that his license to kill number 007 is not that much different than this dance group's name ZOOZ, which means move in hebrew. So, at least for a theoretical visit to Melbourne he would be known as James Bond 00Z, licensed to dance.

Apparently, research is not the exclusive expertise of our historical editor. The Melbourne video below on the left (and on the right is the script) is one version of the origins of James Bond. Understand that this is in a humorous vein and we can't vouch for the information indicated. Move your cursor over the video below - left and click the appropriate control. JAMES BOND 007 –

NARRATOR: Belinda

When Ian Fleming wrote the novel about the super agent James Bond 007

he never revealed that he had actually based this character on a super Mossad secret agent named Hymie Bondshtein. Agent Chai, 0018 (Licence to Live)

Bondshtein has been employed ‘On His Mossad’s Secret Service” for more than 20 years & has been on many, dangerous secret assignments both abroad & in Israel. He infiltrated many spy rings & bravely risked his life on numerous occasions to protect his country.

One of his past secret missions was to discover the truth in the Levy/Bitton scandal. His mission was to discover if it was Avi Levy or Gadi Bitton who choreographed the dances Tof Vekinor & Casablanca? Hymie courageously infiltrated the inner sanctum of the teachers of Rikudai-am, Israeli dancing as a secret Moyle, I mean…. mole!

Had he been discovered, he would surely have blacklisted by both of these hot blooded Moroccan choreographers. They would even make him pay to come to their dance sessions & MUCH worse still, he would no longer be Facebook friends!! Hymie DID discover the truth, but he has vowed never to reveal it to ANYONE.

The scene is set to the present day. Hymie has been called in to see his chief “M” the Director of Mossad. She is about to send him off on yet another dangerous assignment

Bond extends his right arm to shake hands –

BOND; “The name is Bond, Hymie Bond”

M – “Cut it out Hymie, I’m your mother….. (she continues…) “Hymie, Hamudi, I have been hearing some distressing news through the grapevine, (pun intended) that choreographers in Israel have been copying EXACTLY the steps of dances that were originally choreographed by the famous choreographer from the north, Shmulik Gov Ari! Your mission, should you choose to take it …..wait a minute, wait a minute, (quickly) – this isn’t Mission Impossible!! (Shaking her head!!) ….your mission it is to attend the next hishtalmut - a workshop for Israeli dance teachers, disguised as a markid, to prove whether this is in fact true or not.

I will send in Q, our fabulous scientist & inventor who will run through the latest technology & gadgets he has developed to ensure your safety. I want to be sure that you will be safe my motek sheli. Infiltrating the Israeli dance world is more perilous than any other missions you have ever been assigned to. Bond shakes his head in agreement

You know I have always been so worried about you driving so fast in your Aston Martin – so I have asked Q to issue you with a much safer car – you can choose between a Volvo or a VW Beetle convertible. And of course you can choose the colour! (excitedly) And I’ve packed you a nice lunch bubbale – you will need lots of energy to dance!” Gives him a HUGE bag of goodies.

M Presses a buzzer on the desk - Q walks in with a big bag, that contains lots of equipment - including a breast phone, a portable recorder pen & special shoes with a camera in the toes,. & a special stun gun –(a water pistol) a watch (that keeps perfect time)

Bond extends his right hand to shake – “The name is Bond, Hymie Bond…..

Q - “cut it out Hymie, I’ve known you since you were a little pisher”…….

Q demonstrates how each gadget will work. And Bond is very excited about them all

Q– “I must warn you Hymie that you are up against 2 other operatives who will stand at nothing to protect their boss the billionaire, Gold Foot. He has been constantly encouraging choreographers to copy steps from each other & to produce dances that are like a production line of cars. Gold Foot has been dancing for over 40 years, but he has a terrible memory & finds it too difficult to learn & remember new basic steps especially those that have a difficult rhythm. He likes only easy dances with simple patterns so that he doesn’t have to extend his brain in any way. He has hired the 2 assassins, Jaws & Dr Shmo, to protect his self interest & his evil ways.

BOND: I remember Jaws from a previous assignment ? He has giant metal teeth & giant feet that can stomp on you & flatten you in an instant. And of course how can I forget my arch enemy the evil Dr Shmo. He has been recently discovered to be pumping peptides & other illegal substances into Australian footballers & also I’ve heard his injecting many Israeli dancers so that they can dance marathons all night long without getting tired.

Q: But there is a real danger that he might inject YOU Hymie with something even much more lethal & sinister – female hormones - you might grow some boobies! Hymie looks totally shocked & aghast!

NARRATOR (BELINDA):“Enter Bond’s secretary, Miss Geltshekel, she is also known throughout Europe as Miss Moneypenny.”

Bond extends his right hand: BOND….”the name is Bond, Hymie Bond.”

GELTSHEKEL: cut it out Hymie, I’ve been your secretary for years”

NARRATOR: (Belinda): Geltshekel has actually had the hots for Hymie for years, but one of the glamorous Bond girls has always managed to interfere with her seduction of him. She thinks she has a chance to get close to Hymie with this assignment by being his dance partner in rikudai-am. She knows that Hymie is extremely fussy & only chooses the BEST partners to dance with. She has been secretly practicing & has mastered all the dances by Shmulik already & is working on some dances of other choreographers. She is light on her feet & is ready & able to be dipped by him - any time! BOND watching her dancing approvingly: Yes Miss Geltshekel – I think you will do just fine on this next undercover assignment

Geltshekel lets down her hair which is up in a bun & does a head toss as they dance off the stage

The next scene –

NARRATOR: (Annette) SOMEONE HAS TO BRING IN THE HISHTALMUT SIGN

Hymie & Geltshekel are at a hishtalmut (a teachers workshop) where one choreographer (Gadi Bitton) has just presented his new dance, Shir Hamayim – play music for part 2 & it is danced by Hymie & Geltshekel. They then turn to look at each other in shock.

BOND– “OMG it is the same as part 2 in Shmulik’s 1993 dance Rikud Yechefim! (They then both dance part 2 of Rikud Yechefim . Then the music for the beginning of Ad Sof Ha’Olam is played & Hymie & Geltshekel dance it. Also the transition part in Toda La’Olam – they dance the same steps then they sing the beginning of Stam Yom Shel Chol

BOND:. “Exactly the same steps”…..(Hymie & Geltshekel look at each other gob smacked

NARRATOR : (Annette) As they watch more & more dances, they notice that nearly every new dance has the same basic step – Na’ale Na’ale which is a direct copy from Shmulik’s dance by that name which he choreographed way back in 1986!

BOND & GELTSHEKEL sing Na’ale Na’ale & dance it..

GELTSHEKEL :The other choreographers are DEFINITELY stealing Shmulik Gov Ari’s top-secret dance steps!!!

BOND: I have to get this crucial evidence back to Mother as soon as possible before anyone recognizes me.

NARRATOR (Annette) Unbeknownst to Hymie, Jaws & Dr Shmo were also at the hishtalmut undercover as dance choreographers. They observe that Hymie & Geltshekel had discovered the truth, so they come up behind them, gag & bind them.

JAWS: “I have a great plan – a terrible way to torture them – we will make them watch us dance, together, totally out of rhythm for hours & hours on end - OY – surely that is a fate worse than death! “

Dr Shmo nods his head in agreement – “GREAT IDEA”

Jaws & Dr Shmo both start dancing in front of Bond & Geltshekel - he screams & writhes around in agony…

BOND: ”NO NO NO” – this can’t be happening” Geltshekel also upset

NARRATOR (ANNETTE) Suddenly, another super spy - Austin Powers, arrives on the scene in his mini minor–(Belinda rides in on a scooter). Austin Powers & Bondshtein had worked together years earlier on another secret assignment at the Casino Royale. Through Wikileaks Austin has learned that his friend, Agent 0018 is in great peril….He MUST save him!

AUSTIN: In every Bond movie there has always been a fantastic car chase - so here is our obligatory car chase – (Belinda & Claude chse each other around stage on scooters) . Austin cuts Hymie free.

There is a shoot out - Austin & Hymie against Jaws & Dr Shmo (who is armed with a lethal injection of estrogen which both Austin & Hymie must avoid at all costs) Jaws is throwing missiles (paper planes)Hymie remembers he has the super gun (water pistol) supplied to him by Q & shoots them both with that & overpowers their kidnappers. They freeze on the spot!

Hymie thanks Austin. Both are very happy, & they SING a bit of Bakapayim & clap hands

AUSTIN “Hymie my dear friend, you have saved the world of Rikudai-am from boredom. Once again, creativity in choreography will be encouraged.”

GELTSHEKEL whispers loudly to Austin so that everyone can hear – “Aren’t you the Spy who Shagged me? “

AUSTIN replies “Yeah Baby! “ Takes her into a “standard” (reverse G/vine, pressure turn, turn the girl) finishing with a big dip & they go off stage together hugging & giggling………..

Hymie’s mother “M” & “Q ”come running onto the scene –

M - I am delighted to see that you are safe my little Hymie– especially from that tramp, that “CORVE” , that ZONA, Geltshekel.

Q checks to see that all the equipment has worked & that Hymie now has all the evidence they need.

BOND – lets have a toast to celebrate my success with my favourite drink – - a Manishevitz cherry brandy! I want my drink shaken, not stirred”

The 3 of them make a toast – “Le’chaim!” with martini glasses

This would be a good time for a couple of BOND GIRLS to walk across the stage link their arms with Hymie & after a kiss & a wink he goes off with them. They would be wearing Bonds’ underwear on top of their clothes or bodysuit of course!!!……….

PROPS:Martini glasses, CHERRY BRANDY, 2 scooters, Buzzer, Table, 2 chairs (back seat of car), some string or rope to bind, scissors, brief case or bag containing all the scientific gadgets, Paper planes, Water pistol (filled with water), 2 toy machine guns
