As indicated in the previous section, Locations, Neumann University lies in Delaware County below what was known as Glen Riddle - the estate of the Riddle family - along PA Route 452 where it intersects with Concord Road. Originally, solely the site of the convent house of the Sisters of St Francis, the school, with origins going back to 1964, has attained University status as of this year, 2009. Neumann University, at that time Neumann College, played host to Hora Aviv from 2003 through 2006. We recently had a chance to tour the University and below are some additional pictures of the campus.
This is a picture of the rear of the Bruder center for student life at Neumann University. Many of us marched through this entrance on our way to the gym. It was also the site of the Sunday afternoon barbecue. To some degree this side of the Bruder center creates a kind of quadrangle and Hora Aviv took advantage of that at the barbecue
More of the quadrangle indicated above. again this would have been one of the sights as we walked from the dorm rooms, crossing Convent Road into the campus proper. Similar to suburban and rural locaitons of campuses that have been used by Hora Aviv, this campus gives a feel of being wide open. This is heavily contrasted by Wesley college which is located directly in the heart of Dover, Delaware and gives a very different feel when walking its campus
Inside Bruder center. This should be very familiar to those who attended Hora Aviv on any the years between 2003 and 2006. These are the tables where all the meals would be eaten. After the meals, up front of the tables, you would get your directions pertaining to the camp. While you can't see it in this picture, there is an entrance further to the right. There, Shmuel and his son, Ron, would set up tables for camp registration. In this shot you can see the double doors to the right that are the entrance to the gym where we danced. Generally, when the camp was in operation, partitions hid this gym entrance from this point of view.
This picture gives you a view of the Bruder gym as you would enter. The stands would look different, having been extended. If Hora Aviv was in operation, tables would be set up for the equipment and large speakers would be set around the gym. The Hora Aviv staff, as it does in every location, adds bunting, flags and pictures to make the dance floor more festive. For this shot, which we thank the administration of the University for allowing, only a portion of the lighting was turned on. With all the lighting on, the gym is well illuminated
Here's a picture of the outside of the dorms with one of the Gazebos prominently placed. Generally, there would be security, in the form of a guard, for entrance and exiting and the dormitories allowed easy access to clothes washers and dryers. For those who were at Wesley, recently, this dorm in comparison to the Wesley college dorm provides more stairs and more elevators if memory serves. In leaving this building, the participants would turn right and walk through the parking lot to Convent road and then onto the campus.
If you now walk around the back of the dorm (what would be to the right of the previous picture) you will see next door to the dorm building a construction site that will house the new athletic facilities of Neumann University. As mentioned previously, the tennis courts have been relocated to the rear of this new building and now provide easy access for those in the dorms. This new building dominates Convent road and is a real surprise if you haven't visited the campus lately.
